Song of the Moment: Explained!

If you’ve been around these parts for a minute, you will have noticed from time to time my mentions of Songs of the Moment (SotM). Chances are, you probably haven’t so, you probably haven’t. I used to do it a reasonable amount on here, but just really haven’t. Actually, I’ve pretty much taken up that task on other platforms. So, since I have a sec, I will explain it to you anyway if I hadn’t already.

So, a Song of the Moment is that song that you might hear on the radio that sticks with you for a while and won’t go away(unless you force it, because it stays with you my friend, and if you*….um, yeah). Anyway, it could be that song that someone happens to be humming and it attaches to you like a leech. Could be the song you woke up singing. Could be the little ditty in the shower that sticks around afterward. You get the point, I think. For me, it’s a combination of those things, plus a a couple of others. I have any number of songs running through my head at any given moment. There are some that stick around for sometimes days, or for 30 seconds or so. Sometimes, a song will pop up in the midst of a conversation with someone. Sometimes, I’m the one the that’s humming the songs that other people catch on to subliminally (I know I’m not the only one, but it feels special to me). Sometimes, you gotta do right, for you to be happy…

A lot times, a Song of the Moment has nothing to do with how I’m currently feeling or what I’m writing about. It’s not too often, at least to my knowledge, that there is a correlation, but it can and does happen. I don’t play the radio in my car as I have an MP3 player, so any song that I’m listening to there was meant to be played. And I thought I would have some kind of hard and fast rules about what constitutes a Song of the Moment candidate, but outside what I’ve already said, there isn’t much else. The only thing I’d make a rule to is the fact the song has to stick your head for a reasonable amount of time. Obvious, you think of a song and 30 seconds later it’s gone, while that’s is truly a song of the moment, it doesn’t qualify. I guess if you tack on the fact that if you are on to a song that you hold on to until you could foresee ably write it down somewhere, that could qualify.

The reason I don’t actually write down (or post) every time I have one of these moments, is because I’d be here (or somewhere) every other minute or so. There was, a time where I was going to write down every song that stuck in my head to see if there was some hidden correlation to how I was feeling at the moment. I quickly realized that was a fools’ errand. 🙂 Hell, if I typed every song I thought about during the typing of this post (including the ones I’ve alluded to), I’d never finish it. It’s like that sometimes.

Anyway, that explains that. If you come across any past or future posts that bear the mark of Song of the Moment, stand proud to know that mark of….excellence(?) means. I mean, outside of the obvious meaning, anyway. So without further ado:

Song of the Moment
Cherish the Day – Sade

And since you probably saw this one coming, I have a question for you. What is your song of the moment? You think there is any meaning to it, or did it randomly pop into your head and you couldn’t help yourself from singing it? Inquiring minds, want to know.

Incidently, I would have linked to older Song of the Moment posts, but I apparently don’t have them tagged, and I’m sleepy right now. Maybe I’ll go back and do that sometimes. Maybe.

(edit) SotM is not the same as np (Now Playing) because I’m not normally actually playing the song that becomes a SotM. Don’t know why I felt compelled to add this. I should NOT be writing while I’m sleepy.

* – Bonus: if you know where that line came from. What’s the bonus:? Satisfaction (I got the right tactics) that you are one step closer to being like the madness of my method. 🙂 Lucky you. And if you need ’em, i got crazy prophylactics.

Quick reviews…just ’cause

The Roots – Rising Down: Go get it.

Estelle – Shine: Why don’t you already have this?

Portishead – Third
: Still need to spin this one some more, but get it anyway. Maybe they’ll get their asses into the studio more. (If any member of Portishead happens to see this, I say this with love. And where the Hell is Keybored 299 03??)

Iron Man movie: Hadn’t seen it. Shut up! I usually wait until they get to DVD anyway.

Grand Theft Auto IV: It apparently is the shit. I’ve only cracked it open and started it before getting busy with other crap. Lemme lone. If I finish it before Soul Calibur IV, that’ll be saying something.

That’s all I can think of right now. If this wasn’t enough for you. Allow me to point you to a time passer.
It’s called Typeracer. Sounds self explanatory? It is. You’re a car, you’re in a race with other cars. First one to type their way to the finish line with the given lines of text, wins. Mistakes have to be dealt with before moving on. I personally, suck, but their seems to be some jokers who can type 160 words a second (that’s insane!). There is a leaderboard, if you some choose to participate. You can also practice, which let’s you know how bad you really are. It’s pretty fun…if you like typing games.

Later!

Me love me Roots and Sulka

hip hop music

I love the Roots. They are one of my top five fave Hip Hop groups. This means I get pretty excited when I hear about new joints from them. The problem is, until right now, i hadn’t heard about anything new. So imagine my surprise when I check out this post on Soulbounce.com

The Roots Redeem Themselves With ‘Rising Up’ – SOULBOUNCE.COM

I didn’t know about the first song/video much less the flack from it. I must be slipping my old age. Anyway, check out the newly released track from the Roots Crew that is on the page above. It’s classic Roots hotness! Meanwhile, I’m going to go sulk in the corner…

For one of the reasons why, click this link:

xkcd – A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language – By Randall Munroe

I could have embedded it here, but click through, there is more funny than that.

I was just laughing at the wife for going ga ga for the Nintendo Wii being shown on Rachael Ray. Funnier still since I told her about it a while ago and that she had a chance to try one when my cousin brought his home for Christmas. Won’t be getting it (still can’t find it anyway around here). Not saying never though. *SMH*

This could be remnants from the Strawberry Milk high I was on this morning, but…

From the I don’t know why Dept., here is a list of my 5 favorite songs to wake up to (No particular order):

Somersault (DJ Dangermouse Remix) – Zero 7 Feat. MF Doom
Hummin’ (live) – Cannonball Adderley Quartet
Journey In Satchidananda – Alice Coltrane
Definition (and/or RE: DEFiniton) – Black Star
Down Here On The Ground – Grant Green

Honorable Mentions:
Keep Trying – Groove Theory
Verbal Murder 2 – Pete Rock W/ Big Punisher, Noreaga, and Common
Da Supafriendz – Vast Aire Feat.MF Doom

Still need a reason? Because you didn’t ask but you were wondering. Good enough? 🙂
Need another? What I was originally going to post isn’t working out. What makes it so bad is that I write on the fly. Ida Know

You might THINK that’s the real reason, but it might be.

What’s up, all, some, or one!

Just throwing this one out here just because. Don’t really do the odds and ends posts, because they would end up that way to me. At any case, I hope to have a couple of hopefully interesting posts coming in the next day or so (but you know me). That’s provided my family don’t run me ragged with requests. I need to start charging them, what’s a good rate? 🙂 Don’t really have much in the way of thoughtful either. There are some blogs on the left of this post that can handle that way better than I can. But that’s for another time. There is a ‘Where are they now’ I’ve been thinking about. It may be a little different from the others. There will be an update coming on the missus’ missives soon, too. It’s funny to me, but, later man. Got a new cellphone last week, so if you see some stuff appear and disappear here, that could be part of the reason. I’d like to try out some things.

So anywhoo, just passing a note on the way to checking out my blog fam (see left sidebar again). Come back through later on.

I leave you with a concert from a pretty cool site that I may or may not have mentioned before called Fabchannel.com. This site basically house hundreds upon hundreds(exact count, Ida know) concerts from music artists far and wide. The concerts are, of course, streamed and you can embed the video into your own site, if you so choose. I’ve gone there ever now and the to check out who’s on there that I would care to see. A lot of the concerts are old and there aren’t a lot of “popular” artists which make it even better, personally. There a lot of artists or groups that you may not have even heard of before doing concerts you may not have ever seen before. See how that works? From time to time, I’ll plant one right here for your perusal. So without Freddie Adu, here is a concert from ’07 from Soul artist Eric Roberson from the Paradiso Main Hall. Not sure where it was, but it’s not the US. it won’t matter.

Peace.

P.S. I wonder if there is someone’s Google alert I can set off?

I said Later, MAN!

Where are they now (Update): Portishead

music where are they now

I could have sworn that I have done one of these for them, but I can’t find it. Portishead is one of the greatest groups, ever. OK, that’s a bit much, but they are a great Electronica/trip-hop group from England. Their first album, Dummy, is a classic. They hadn’t had an album on about 10 years and now they are coming back out.

Maybe they heard me. Doubt it. They were already working on the album when I posted about them. I CAN’T WAIT! Portishead is bringing out their third album called…Third, on April 14 (not the third??) I don’t care. I just want to hear it. I know there are tracks on theirMyspace page (I hope “Keybored 299 03” is still on the album) but I’ve been waiting for a new album for a minute. Hopefully, I will have a review of it when it comes out. We’ll see. I’m lazy about stuff like that, but i want to try my hand at it. That’s all I wanted to say about that for now.

Artist look out

music new music lookout

I’ve said it before, I’m a little slow to pick up on some music. I’m trying to get better about it. That said…

I just came across this video “Drop” from a D.C. artist named Plunky B. The video and song are kinda hot. Makes since since it was from an album called “Cold Heat”. Check out the video for yourself. It’s got an Afro-cuban thing going on that’s pretty sweet. I may have to seek out his stuff if it’s all like this. Actually, I just went back to his site and he has some downloadable songs (including “Drop”) to check out. So go check them out also. It appears that the group Plunky and Oneness has been a round for a minute. Peep the Bio while you are there.

Peace

New Music Lookout: Chrisette Michele

music new music lookout

Just getting my hands on the album “I Am” from New artist, Chrisette Michele. The album came out today. I’ve been anticipating this since I heard about her a while back. You may have heard her on the songs “Lost One” from Jay-Z and and “Can’t Forget About You” from Nas. Well, now hear her on her on project. Being that I just got it, this is NOT a review. I don’t do those so well anyway. I may have some impressions after I listen to the whole thing. In the mean time, check out out this conversation from Honeysoul.com

Conversation with Chrisette Michele

Also, she has a video for her first single, “If I Have My Way”. You can find it on Youtube or the link from Honeysoul.com

Video: If I Have My Way

Nas – “Can’t Forget About You”

Jay-Z – “Lost Ones”

I’ve seen the listed price of $7.99 at Best Buy and Circuit City. That’s kind of standard for new artists like this. She’s also on iTunes (with 3 bonus tracks – live versions of 3 songs from the album) for the same price, if you like going that route. I’ve not been a fan of itunes’ low bitrate for it’s songs (sans the iTunes Plus stuff), but the deal is solid. Seems to be on Napster, too. Either way, go get it. Wish I could point you to where you can listen to the whole thing, but I can’t. Itunes and Napster may be able to snippet you. What I can do is point you to her AOL music page if you want to hear a song from the album.

Outside of that, Check out her website, ChrisetteMichele.com, which some stuff to check out (most of which I hadn’t seen) and her Myspace page.

Umm, go!

(On a side note, this young lady is Beautiful! That is all.)

Song of the Moment

“Music For Life” Ft. J Dilla, Nas, Common, Busta Rhymes Marsha Of Floetry

It’s true. I was there. I was in a box musically where I’ve never kept myself. I missed out on a lot of good music in the past year or two. I’m getting better. I have help. Pandora’s riding shotgun even though I hadn’t been on there much lately. Honeysoul and Neosoulcafe are starting to keep me in line and I can’t forget about my man T. Grundy who constantly reminds me what and where the real music stays. I’m set, but I hate the fact that I believed that Soul music was in hibernation.

I don’t listen to the radio much because it seems that the same songs get played every 15 minutes or so. I can’t deal with that. And as far as Rap is concerned, I don’t know, i’m biased because of the school I came from seem more true than these cats out now. That’s now fair even if it is true, so I plan to stick my ear back to the ground check the sound. Jazz for me is an ever growing love. I’ve been exposed to it when I was little and I was hooked ever since. In ’06, I checked out a couple things on the contemporary front, but I lapsed on the classic stuff. Anyway, I am making a conscious effort to rebuild the blocks that fell off my house. Wanna know what I’ve done so far? Let’s stick with Soul for the time being. It’s actually not much, but it’s a step.

You’ve seen my post on Sy Smith, right? I’m looking for true artists like this lady. There are a few and unfortunately I may have to trek into that ungodly den called Myspace (no offense to my known Myspace junkies. I still love you all.) to listen to them. Here are a few:

Darien Brockington

Chrisette Michelle

Choklate

Kimy (Definitely check this one out.)

There are a few more, but you get the point. Like I said, I’m working out. And speaking for working it out, it’s is Valentine’s Day. Whether that means anything to you or not, it’s always a good day for some great music. On that, I’m going to have to ask you to point your browser to this link:

NetInfoWeb 2.0: Soul, R Jazz and Blues on the ‘Net » ‘The Event’: Valentine’s Day-Triple Play…

In a case of my man never letting me down, Mr. TGrundy hosts a very interesting post full of great music mixes as he says, “3 Musketeers” style between himself, Grantlove, and EJ Flavors (whom I’ve checked out in the past and will be hitting up his spot with more frequency). And even if you see this post after February 14th, still check the mixes. After all, you’re still going to Love and/or be in love after today, right? RIGHT?

A hum dinger of a site

music web

Quick, what’s the name of song with that guy who did that thing with the thing….? Here wait, let me hum about 2 seconds of it.

Come on, you know who is it!

If this happens to you on the regular (Don’t lie, it’s not just me), then I have a site for you to send these people and get in some kicks in the process. Midomi.com is a music search site that identifies songs by humming them. If you have a microphone hooked up to your computer, you can go to this site and you can sing (or hum) a few bars of that ditty you’ve trying to find the name of. It then goes out and tries to find the name of the song that you are looking for. It is said to be fairly accurate according to the article that I’ve linked to below. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s not too accurate with Rap songs. Now that I think about it, I haven’t tried it. Oh, if it finds what you are looking for and you want to buy it, there will be a link to where you can do that.

And now for the beautiful part. The site also let’s you record said rendition of songs and share in a Youtube / Myspace type fashion. So now you can bring that shower version of Mariah Carey to the masses. This is my favorite part because anyone can come to the site and listen to some good and some not so good versions of songs from Joanne and Joe Shmoe. HOTNESS! It’s the stuff that American Idol was made from (God help us). I’ve actually heard some people with some pretty good voices on the joint. And I can always go on a Youtube style hunt for the next William Hung. That’s where the kicks come in.

But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it, check out the article below from Webware.com and then go to Midomi.com and check it out. I’m sure I’ll hear a couple of you there shortly. 🙂
