Song of the Moment

Song Of The Moment sotm

It’s been a while since I’ve done one, but there have been plenty. I should have kept better record of them. Probably could have turned them into something. Anyway, this is the first on this site. The rest I have done are here. Let’s get to it…

This has to be the shortest sparked but most appropriate song for some of the way that I’m feeling & will feel going into the new year. I love it when it happens like that. What can can I say, it just felt like right.

Brand New Heavies – Feels Like Right

Brand New Heavies – Feels Like Right

Couldn’t find a video for this song, sadly, but glad that I have the space to put the song up. 🙂

Enjoy!

The Holy Triumv

music Soul

While I don’t put that much stock into the Christmas holiday, I put hella stock into a couple of songs for the season. So in other words, if I don’t hear these three songs, Christmas is canceled. period.

Donny Hathaway – This Christmas

Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song

and of course,

The Temptations – Silent Night

Oh, you know what, there is an honorable mention that can be added to this list:

Boys II Men – Let It Snow

Happy Holidays, everybody!

Musical memories

moments in time

You ever have that one song or songs that just trigger a memory every time you them? Good, glad i’m not the only one. It’s funny to me how, and when, that happens. I guess it’s a beautiful thing that music can spark a memory, good or bad. Allow me to share a couple with you right now.

Groove Theory – Tell Me (Groove Theory – 1995)

This song was “dedicated” to me by a young lady I met back in College. She was (and probably still is) total sweetheart. We met on the on a BBS called ISCA and became friends. I even went to go see her a couple of times at her school. This song was “dedicated” to me as, I guess, a means to tell me that she liked me and wanted to know how I feel. At first, I failed to realize this(though I felt that she liked me) when she asked me to listen to this song. I had already heard it & liked it before then, but it took on another meaning after that moment.

Frank McComb – All You Need Is Love (Love Stories – 2000)

Now this is a case where the artist more than the song itself was the spark. There was another young lady that I met a few years ago(don’t worry, they won’t all be attached to woman….I think) that I met through my best friend. She was mad cool people & we hit it off from day one. Might have to do with us being a good bit alike, I think. Not sure if that’s good or bad, though. Anyway, one night we were chillin’ at her place and we were talking about music (as we were prone to do), and she mentioned Frank McComb. I had never heard of him at the time(which was not too long after his first album, Love Stories, came out in 2000. The young lady, whom I should really give a name to, played a few tracks off of the album including her faves. The album itself, was great on first listen, but it was this song here that got it’s hooks into me and never let go. Granted, I have plenty of other reasons (and sparks) that remind me of the young lady in question, but this one is more of the more indearing ones. 🙂

Keith Sweat – I’ll give all my love to you (I’ll Give All My Love To You – 1990)

Now this one doesn’t directly have to do with me. Back in High School after I started driving, one of my homeboys from another school would roll out when he came in town. One night we were out at a game or something when we ran into a female classmate of mine (out of the sea of my classmates that we had been running into at the game) that took a liking to my friend. I can’t remember, but I think they had met & been talking before this time. Anyway, we ended up taking the young lady home(who just so happen to live near the same area as we did). So my man walks the girl up to her door & I stay in the car. They talk for a couple of minutes & it looked as though there was going to be a kiss or two…except that my man started walking out to the car a minute or two later.

Now one thing you must know about me is that I was a bip sap back in the day. Some say I still am. So when my boy comes back to the car and gets in, I’m like “hold up, something should have happened”. So I told dude to go back to over to her door (where she was still standing, btw) & handle business. So, he gets out of the car, & I pop in a tape that was cued up near this song & pumped it up neighbors be damned. And sure enough, they kissed. I smiled & had my own little twisted moment.

Keith Sweat – Ill Give All My Love To You.mp3 (Actually, it was the interlude that played, but roll with it)

I’m sure there is a meme on this or something. Regardless, I know you all have similar stories/songs like these. Please share them with me in the comments. I’m sure I have some more at some point.

Albums/song of the year ’08 thoughts

listies

So people are starting to put out their album/songs of the year lists right now. I don’t have one, but maybe by the end of the month, who knows. In reading through a few, I’ve noticed one glaring fact. Check it.

Allmusic.com

In looking at Allmusic’s Hip Hop/Rap albums list, there are 20 albums. 10 that I knew about, 4 that I own, and 1 that I don’t give a shit about(could have been 2 but I’m giving Nas a pass for some reason). The rest, I either had not heard of, or ignored. At the time of this posting, they didn’t have an R&B/Soul list, but check to the right of the page for their other lists. I am definitely not up on the Reggae, Jazz, or Blues offerings admittedly.

Own:
Black Milk – Tronic
Jean Grae – Jeanius
Q-Tip – The Renaissance
The Roots – Rising Down

Did not know was out:
Gza – Pro Tools
Rza as Bobby Digital – Digi Snacks
Scarface – Emeritus (saw in store, but hadn’t heard anything)

Knew about but slept on:
Nicolay & Kay – Time:Line

Soulbounce.com

The thing I love about these cats is that they haven’t steered me wrong the whole time I’ve been reading them (I found out about them earlier this year). So I guess I should be embarrassed that I haven’t picked up or found out more about some of their picks now, shouldn’t I? Yep, but folks will have you broke if you let them. 🙂

Their lists: ill Mami, nOvaMatic, Butta, Harlem, Ro

Let’s just say that there are folks on their lists that I have slept completely on(or haven’t heard of) and call it a day. The list would be shorter for what I have caught on to. I’m still going through a couple of their lists at the time of posting this, but we do have Raphael Saadiq, Foreign Exchange, Lalah Hathaway, The Roots, Estelle, & Q-tip in common. Zo & Tigallo is not on this list because I don’t have it, but do like them. Still working on Black Milk, Jazzanova, & Little Dragon.

So basically this tells me one thing. There is a whole lot of good music out there that I’m missing out on. Ok, two things, I’m probably still going to jack the Bouncer’s post idea. Yea, it’s not a new one, but I wouldn’t have thought about it had I not come across theirs. 🙂

Dahell’s going on here?

Hello, My name is Roddykat. You may know me from sites such as that one that where I spit lunacy on a constant basis…or my blog of inconsistent postings. You gotta love it when you do things on a whim. I guess this blog represents two things: 1) I’ve got way too much time on my hands at unexpected moments, & 2) I now have my own space, Beeches! This joint is hosted by me & protected by the red, the black, & the green, Sisseeeeeez! You would have thought I would have just imported my blog over to here and rolled on, but no. Maybe later. Anyway, For some reason, I decided to break off the music posts from my blog into this space. It seems that at one point in recent history, they took over the blog. That happened early on too, which puts in mind a funny story that I won’t tell right now.

I love music. I always have. I’ve slept on a lot of it in recent years, but now I’m trying to get back on it. With the help of sites like Soulbounce & the various podcasts(see links to the right) I’ve listened to, I’ve come across some marvelous stuff & I’m geeked up again. My wallet won’t like it, but you gotta make it do what it do. I’ve always been a fan/follower of Hip Hop, Soul, Jazz, Funk…just music in general and I hope to deepen and expand that love with this site.

So with that, I bring you this site where I have no idea where it’s going to go, but I do know that I will make it me, regardless. It will allow me to do some things that I have thought of on my other blog but couldn’t or didn’t do there. There may be even a treat or two coming down the line. Please excuse the plain janeness of this iteration of the site(at the time of this posting). That’s what happens when you throw stuff up without preparation.

And I am working on my brevity…fail. 🙂

Hope you stick around & enjoy the ride. 🙂
